In the entire 90-year existence of the National Football League
(NFL), there is probably no other linebacker who is as intense and as
tenacious as Ray Lewis. Widely regarded as being of the greatest
linebackers of all time, Lewis has been the cornerstone of the Baltimore
Ravens' defense for 16 years. After having a brilliant college career
playing football for the University of Miami, he entered the 1996 NFL
Draft and was chosen by the Baltimore Ravens as the 26th overall pick.
Despite
his impressive resume with the University of Miami, many critics
doubted that Lewis would be able to last long as an NFL linebacker due
to his size; even though they noted that his intensity, tackling, and
speed were some of his strengths. Lewis would quickly prove them wrong
as he had an outstanding rookie season by compiling 110 tackles
including 15 for a loss which led the NFL. He also added 2.5 sacks, one
interception, and six deflected passes during his rookie season.
As
the 1997 season came, Lewis would continue to become one of the most
dominant linebackers in the league and even earned his first Pro Bowl
berth during that year. He was also awarded the 1999 NFL Alumni
Linebacker of the Year. Lewis would have his best season in 2000 as he
spearheaded the Ravens' defense that set an NFL 16-game single season
record for fewest rushing yards and passing yards allowed.
The
team also had four shutouts during the 2000 season, which is just one
game shy of the all-time NFL record. Lewis was also able to win the big
one as he would lead the Ravens to victory in Superbowl XXXV against the
New York Giants and was named the MVP of the game. His intensity and
outspoken demeanor on the field has made him a fan favorite among
Baltimore Ravens' fans and an intimidating figure on defense.
However,
despite his tough image and intensity on the football field, Lewis was
one of the most charitable figures in the NFL having participated in a
number of events for charity. He founded the Ray Lewis 52 Foundation, a
non-profit organization that aims to help disadvantaged youth by
providing them with economic and personal assistance. His foundation has
helped several people in the Baltimore community and his philanthropic
ways have made him one of the most respected figures in the history of
professional sports.
When it is all said and done, Ray Lewis will not only go down as one of the greatest
